Osteoperosis
Osteoporosis is a condition involving thinning of the bones with the possibility of bone fracture due to this thinning. An indicator of this condition is a DEXA (type of x-ray) number of minus 2.5 or lower.
Risk factors for osteoporosis
- Not getting enough calcium and vitamin D
- Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption
- A small frame
- Not exercising on a regular basis or engaging in weight-bearing activities
- Family history of osteoporosis
Prevention and Precaution
- Precautions can be taken to limit the complications that can occur as a result of having osteoporosis.
- Speak with your physician about appropriate medications or supplements.
- Assess your home and work place for any risk factors that may place you at greater risk for falls.
- Contact a physical therapist to assist you in beginning an exercise program tailored to and taking into consideration factors relating to your diagnosis.
- Be diligent and aware of your posture and body mechanics throughout all aspects of your life.
- Stop smoking and limit your alcohol consumption.
